How To Get Rid Of Low Quality Backlinks | Google Search Console

As you may already have known, Google and other web search engine view backlinks as a vote to the quality of your content. But the fact is, not all backlinks that your site get is actually counted as a vote.

For example, Google have some quality guidelines and thus will consider any backlinks that go against those guidelines as spammy and low quality backlinks.

Having this type of backlinks is very disadvantageous to your site ranking in Google. If you have these type of backlinks (low quality backlinks) and you cannot remove it manually, you can use the Disavow backlinks tool of Google Search Console to tell Google to ignore that backlink. Here is the guide on how to use this tool.

Disavow Backlinks using Google Search Console

First Step: Google Search Console Account

You will need to have a Google Search Console account and have verified that you are the real owner of the site before you can use the Disavow backlinks tool of Google. Visit the Google Search Console site to create your account and get your site ownership verified.

Next you will need to create a text file (i.e. the file type needs to be .txt and the encoding should be  UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII) which contains url of all the webpage you are getting the low quality backlinks from.

You can use the popular Windows utility called Notepad to create this list.
When creating the list, each url you are getting the low quality backlink from should be in one line, and the line should start with an hash (#) sign. This is an example of how the list should be complied.

# removed most links, but missed these
# Contacted owner of on 7/1/2012 to
# ask for link removal but got no response

You will notice that the last link has a domain: prefix. Use this only if you want Google to ignore all backlink from a site.

Third Step: Upload the File

When you are done compiling the list, head over to the Disavow backlint page of the Google Search Console site.
Select your website and then click on the Disavow links button.
In the next screen, click the Choose file button to upload the list.

That is all.

Note that though this tool is good, it can harm your site ranking in Google Search Result if you use it incorrectly. So you should be very careful with the way you use the Disavow Backlink tool of Google Search Console.
